Switching to the north bank of the Thames for the second leg I walk down Victoria Embankment, past the 3500 year old Cleopatra's Needle and reaching the Houses of Parliament just in time to hear Big Ben chime ten o'clock. Beyond Westminster the path is still well paved, though tourists are replaced with "January runners" and dog walkers. When Hammersmith Bridge finally comes into view I'm surprised to be able to see the 440 foot arch of Wembley Stadium 5 miles behind it.
